Bee Gees - Love Songs review

Most will associate the Bee Gees with Seventies funk/disco, laced with comedy falsetto, but Love Songs proves that a substantial portion of the Gibb brothers' output was of the love ballad variety, where you'll find a fair old selection of solid gold classics.

Sure, this will go down like a lead balloon amongst today's ringtone generation, but fans of the softer side of vintage pop will feel right at home amongst the cosy confines of songs like How Deep Is Your Love, Words and Closer Than Close. However, although there are occasional forays into upbeat territory, like Juliet, to lump 20 of these songs together rather than to appreciate them in contrast to the band's other output has its downsides - particularly when it draws the attention to just how mawkish and syrupy the boys could be. This kind of music is best dipped into in small doses unless you're trying to transform your life into a sugar-coated rose petal fantasy.

All that said, your Mum'll love it for Christmas.
