Cagedbaby - Will See You Now review

Labelled in some quarters as "the new Röyksopp", Cagedbaby - aka Brighton-based Tom Gandey and his band - extend the scope of alternative electronica using shades of a different palette, namely the likes of The Beloved, INXS and Prince. To add to the mix there are also tinges of French groovy rock outfits Phoenix and Tahiti 80 to satisfy those who believe our continental friends can show us a thing or two when it comes to turning out groovy beats.

Will See You Now is an eclectic mix of funky tunes and blippy soundtracks, matched by the common cause of danceability. A tune like Golden Triangle is pure INXS pop, blended with funky guitars and Tom doing a mean Hutchence impersonation, whether by design or otherwise. Disco Biscuit takes the fundamentals of the dancefloor, admires its heritage and then gives it a thoroughly modern shake-up to great effect. 16 Floors is darkly brooding electronica; basically imagine Marilyn Manson eschewing his guitar-laden gothic stance for mesmerising synthesizers and you've pretty much got it. There's something for everyone, basically.

And as well as the music, the cover of Will See You Now - beardy, bespectacled priests - is a blast too.
