Five O'Clock Heroes - Bend To The Breaks review

A la the Kaiser Chiefs, Hard-Fi and even Razorlight, the Five O'Clock Heroes do a fine line in upbeat, cheeky-chappy guitar-led pop.

Of all the new breed of such bands building a following at the moment, FOCH's borrow most from a number of acts from the back end of the Seventies and early Eighties, particularly the Cars, The Knack - remember My Sharona? - and even postmodern mods Secret Affair.

FOCH's youthful exuberance comes across in spades, and songs like Good Lovers, Skin Deep and Run To Her are punchy, catchy and not without melodic charm, often of the sing-a-long variety to boot.

Frontman Anthony Ellis' vocals may not be the most refined in the world of pop today but silky-smooth doesn't always equate with most effective, and the lad's charisma seeps through alright. It served Paul Weller well in The Jam's early days and there are plenty of pointers towards the Modfather's musings here. The press people suggest another influence, namely the Police, but this is hard to spot, which is probably no bad thing. Now, if they were to have mentioned The Jam in their blurb...
