Disney's singing princess reveals her true identity

We should be grateful that the obligatory retro-pop cover on Breakout is Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun rather than a version of her father's novelty country atrocity Achey Breaky Heart (released in 1992, the year she was born). Although like global terror, the end of a proper British summer forever and the cancellation of Grange Hill - it will happen some day and it's a doomsday reality we are going to have to live with.

Until then, Miley is a straightforward wealthy teen whose Barbie-wear-leopardskin rock anthems about saving the planet and people not understanding her make Avril Lavigne seem like a twisted punk rock hell-whore.

For uncynical pre-teens Cyrus in Hannah Montana mode is pure entertainment fantasy and little changes in the transition to her real name, save for a stronger hint of her country roots. In Fly On The Wall and 7 Things she has a couple of feisty pop belters that could see her career survive into 2009, by which time Hannah Montana will be unleashed in movie form.
