Chris Martin bails out ex-soap-star siren. Results: so-so

Natalie Imbruglia may lie awake in the night chewing her duvet in frustration that, 12 years into a musical career that has seen her shift units around the globe, most people struggle to name one of her songs after debut single Torn.

Yet in truth this sorry situation is largely the fault of the former Neighbours starlet, as she rarely varies her musical template to include anything other than sleek, moderately sophisticated but ultimately bland, forgettable pop-rock.

Come To Life, her fourth album, is Imbruglia business as usual. Nothing here is actively offensive and when the hooks snag, as on My God and Fun, she resonates a fetching melancholy, oddly resonant of Suzanne Vega.

Mostly, though, it goes in one ear and out the other, even when the Chris Martin-penned Want suggests a dance floor-friendly Florence and the Machine. Too much filler, not enough thriller.

More to try:
Holly Valance: State of Mind
Suzanne Vega: Solitude Standing
Emma Bunton: Free Me
