Fires sees its second outing since its initial release on Pallot's own Idaho label last year, and if there's any justice it will build on the respectable 10,000-plus sales the DIY version has already achieved.
Blending rock, country and folk, Pallot has all the makings of being the UK's answer to Joni Mitchell; just listen to tracks like Sophia or Damascus and say it isn't so. There are also similarities with the better moments of Sheryl Crow and echoes of Kate Bush, but without the latter's early career tendency to screech.
Pallot's voice is a delight, whatever style the song, however the emotional impetus. And her songwriting displays a maturity well beyond her years. At the end of the day every tune on this album is an unmitigated joy. Go buy.
