Pop thrills and dancefloor spills on very cool debut from stylish disco-punkers
This long-awaited, much-delayed debut from the sartorially dazzling London five-piece is already swimming against the tide of a "nu-rave" backlash. However, aside from a slot on the NME rave tour with Klaxons and CSS, NYPC stand apart from any such supposed "movement". The 11 songs here make it abundantly clear where the band are pitched, taking such old quirky punk-funkers as ESG and Tom Tom Club as inspiration more than any siren-drenched dayglo old school bangers.
The nonchalant but deliciously filthy Ice Cream (a recently re-released single) sets the Fantastic Playroom tone: Tahita Bulmer's cooler-than-thou sing-song rap glides across Eighties Visage-esque synth, twitchy basslines and mid-tempo disco rhythms. Elsewhere, the energising Jerk Me and the euphoric Get Lucky demonstrate the band’s ear for spiky infectious hooks as much as an eye for the dancefloor while the superb tribal-funk of Hiding On The Staircase has a lyrical depth beyond its exuberant bounce. Such pop excellence should ensure this Pony Club remains a league above the rest.
