Orson - Bright Idea review

Every now and again a band comes along who slip so insidiously into the public consciousness that you wonder whether or not they're the result of some weird governmental mind control experiment. One day you're doing the washing up and idly wondering what the name of the band who've made the song which you can't stop whistling is, the next thing you know you're hearing the same catchy riffs on builder's radios, coming from taxi windows and back gardens and being played in The Queen Vic in EastEnders.

No Tomorrow, the stand-out single from this new album from Orson - which must have had the A&R men rubbing their thighs in anticipation when the demos came through - is the work of one of these bands. Let's pray they don't use this innate catchiness as a platform for any unacceptably anti-social political beliefs or try to bring about social dissolution and anarchy.

Anyway, the rest of the album is pretty good. No Tomorrow is the kind of thing that gets you skipping round your kitchen in glee, Already Over, So Ahead Of Me and Last Night have enough Maroon 5-style charm about them to have the people who do the music for The OC being able to relax for a while and maybe think about a holiday. And sure, this album isn't going to appeal to everybody - you're going to have to be pretty into your guitar pop music and not mind the odd Hall & Oates-style guitar solo to be able to listen to it the whole way through - but bugger it, this reviewer has a massive smile on his face listening to it, which can only be a good thing.
