Collection of mixes and remixes from one of pop music’s finest institutions

We’ve always admired the Pet Shop Boys for the fact that they’re one of the few bands in the world who will always be able to carry on releasing records that sound pretty similar to the ones they were making ten years ago, and people will still buy and adore them. This latest album is a series of mixes of tracks by other people (The Killers, Rammstein, Yoko Ono etc) and of tracks by the Boys themselves.

The opening mix of The Killers’ Read My Mind is like a microcosm of the Pet Shop Boys sound – mutating from epic pop to glitzy disco, orchestral stylings and space-age synths. But Disco 4’s highlights – David Bowie’s excellent Hallo Spaceboy, Yoko Ono’s superb Walking On Thin Ice, their own I’m With Stupid – succeed best because of the lack of gimmickry, proving that while the formula is undeniably a bit clichéd, it’s their own, and one which works. Simply put, this is good, addictive pop music for fans and new listeners alike.
