Cool girl band with protean line-up releases average pop album
Much like the philosopher’s broom, the Sugababes as a unit continue to function even when almost all of the originally-existing parts have been replaced. This album – the first full one with the current line-up – sees them again working with the likes of Dallas Austin and Xenomania to craft a collection of pop nuggets to appeal to indie clubbers and teenyboppers alike.
Predictably, Change features a mix of guitar- and beat-led dancefloor tracks (3 Spoons Of Suga, lead single About You Now), funkier R&B numbers (album highlight Backdown), and ballads (Mended By You). And while each is as polished and sassy as you’d expect, the bare fact of the matter is that you’ve heard better versions of each by the same band before. Change isn’t weak or misrepresentative of the girls’ undeniable talent and presence, but it’s just not as good as they’re capable of.
