The beautiful Corr attempts cool on frustratingly patchy Nellee Hooper produced solo debut
While her siblings beaver away at home adding to the Corr clan, the young beautiful one isn’t ready to settle down just yet. So having written a bunch of songs with nowhere to go, Andrea, with the aid of old mucker Bono (on exec producer duties), recruited acclaimed Massive Attack and Björk producer Nellee Hooper to make a solo album. Such unexpectedly hip company for such an uncool Corr means Ten Feet High sounds unlike any of her winsome band’s output.
In fact, this debut has some quirky moments. Opener Hello Boys sees her saucily coo the tale of a brothel madam over a filthily throbbing Goldfrapp-style electronic stomp. A synth-pop cover of Squeeze’s Take Me I’m Yours is also suffused with a sleazy malevolence you’d never think she had in her. These moments, however, along with the seductively acoustic This Is What It’s All About, are the highlights. Elsewhere, Ten Feet High features songs that are instantly forgettable despite Hooper’s knob-twiddling prowess. You can’t help but feel she should have been braver.
