AFI duo release fascinatingly awful electronic side-project

If channel five ever make a programme entitled When Side Projects Go Wrong, the pretentiously named Blaqk Audio would feature heavily. Formed by Davey Havok and Jade Puget of American punk pop band AFI, the pair’s oft-reported love of synths has led them to release this ill-advised collection of electronic pop. And as with many of those terrible TV shows, Cexcells is so toe-curling, you can’t tear your ears away from it – in sheer disbelief.

Think you like Depeche Mode? Blaqk Audio are their bitch. They love them so much, they simply go and copy them on Stiff Kittens, Bitter For Sweet and Where Would You Like Them Left – from the squelchy, pulsing basslines and glacial melodies to hilarious Dave Gahan impressions. Martin Gore will wee his leather chaps with laughter - before contacting his lawyer. Elsewhere, Blaqk Audio (surely unintentionally) do peculiar, camp, hi-energy Euro-pop, as seen on Semiotic Love: who would think it possible to sound both like Pet Shop Boys, and completely po-faced. Again, Again And Again is about 200bpm and actually quite frightening. Cexcells ceriously cucks.
