Naughty Brazilian trio’s baile funk take on electro and hip hop is one hell of a party
While Brazilians CSS bring a sexy edge to their indie art-rock, compatriots Bonde Do Role are plain old filthy. MCs Marina Ribatski and Pedro D'eyrot plus DJ Rodrigo Gorky sample big dumb-arse beats from the Eighties, pilfering from the likes of Alice In Chains and AC/DC to Prince and Tone Loc, and lay down lascivious rhymes over the top in Portuguese. The result is an enormously infectious party-racket that provides an irreverent introduction to funk carioca, or baile funk - the mightily booming Miami bass-like sound of parties in Rio.
Thankfully, the sexually-charged energy of BdR's blistering live shows is captured on much of this debut. Solta O Frango and Geremia sweatily bounce and tease like a voluptuous Rio beauty in a bikini while the Diplo-produced Gasolina has the Kraftwerk-influenced sparseness of early electro workouts by Afrika Bambaataa (who gets a mention in the lyrics). And at just over 30 minutes long, With Lasers is a party that ends far too early.
