Britain’s best loved WAG flies solo.
Sitting in judgement of others – even if she is the nice one and the nation’s sweetheart – puts Cheryl Cole in a perilous position when it comes to her own musical career. As such there is likely to be plenty of sniping surrounding the release of 3 Words, especially as apart from the terrific Fight For This Love and Parachute, there is little to compete with Girls Aloud’s finely tuned pop science.
There is though a shift to a slightly more R&B direction and in this regard she’s assisted by Black Eyed Pea will.i.am who appears on the albums most upbeat track Heaven and rather peculiarly an ever so slightly retooled version of his own solo hit Heartbreaker (which only serves to give the impression that Cole couldn’t generate enough new material of her own) and Taio Cruz who attempts to add a bit of grown-up grind to the flimsy electro Stand Up.
Although less immediate it’s on the title track and ballad Don’t Talk About This Love where Cheryl impresses the most. No one will be disappointed but it’s far from spectacular.
