Sister Bliss, Rollo and Maxi Jazz - aka Faithless - are firmly established as dance music icons, indeed they have been for some considerable time. But there is so much more to them than this.
To All New Arrivals, the band's fifth long-playing record, is the clearest evidence yet that things have moved on a long, long way from the mesmeric splendour of early stuff such as Insomnia, Salva Mea and God Is A DJ, stunning though these were. This new record takes the elements that make up soul-filled electronic dance music and melds them into something completely different. Opening track Bombs is as hypnotic a dance tune as you're likely to hear anywhere, but - and here one wishes to avoid hyperbole - it does so much more than make you move; it really does transport you to another place entirely. And no, you don't have to be on some form of stimulant to "get it".
It's packed with goodies, is this. There are some eclectic groovy bits, such as the huge lift from The Cure's Lullaby on Music Matters, which while comprising pretty much of Maxi rapping over the track nevertheless works a treat. I Hope is filled with hypnotic beauty, while The Man In You sees the band getting rather down, dirty and outright funky. But in an electronica kinda way, of course.
Maxi's rolling intoning does the trick on a number of tunes, while Sister Bliss acts as a fine counterpoint to her frontman where she takes on singing responsibilities, which she does on numerous occasions.
All in all a fine record.
