Mr Gwen Stefani goes solo, unearths horrific new form of grunge-lite torture.
A rare example of a British act that were huge in America but unsuccessful in their homeland, no one ever really denied Bush's strength in churning the grunge broth into something more universally appealing. But somehow we never quite got it. Maybe you needed to drive pick-up trucks down endless roads while chugging back a Corrs to hear it. Or maybe something stuck in our craw about their calculated attempt to woo America and not us.
Whatever, this matters little for Rossdale and his stubbled jaw are now flying solo. His voice, it must be said, is fantastic - right up there with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell for gravelly masculinity. And there are flashes when the songs are almost as good too - The Skin I'm In and Future World both brood magnificently - but the more commercial tracks (particularly This Place Is On Fire) sound disturbingly like Phil Collins attempting to cover Nine Inch Nails. And no, this is not a good thing.
