How far can being unique take you?

When GCWCF (sorry, we have a word limit and don't want to baffle the computer's grammar checker) appeared on the scene, they were rightly touted highly for blending folk-tinged indie with emo-esque lyrics. However, in the year and a half or so that's come between releases, a slew of imitators - Kate Nash perhaps being the first and foremost - have come along and made what was once a fairly unique sound a little bit of a cliché.

The dance element to GCWCF's music is turned up a little bit this time round - Sam Duckworth's heartfelt vocals layered on top of sampled breakbeats and synthesisers that sometimes sound as if they might turn into something interesting - and Kate Nash guests on the song Better Things, which is utterly forgettable, but what was once novel is now stale. GCWCF, in leading the charge, turned originality into something easily repeated, and nowadays come across a bit like a poorer man's Nizlopi (if such a thing can exist). There is passion here, and talent, but in the midsts of a field of rather poor competitors, GCWCF's vision is no longer what it used to be. Which is a shame.
