First album in four years from Mr Jazz Hands.
Initially pitched at the discerning pensioner market – Michael Parkinson was an early supporter – Jamie Cullum has had a difficult time attracting the ears of anyone under the age of 50 ever since, despite his sterling cover versions and handsome profile. Jazz piano – no matter how amazing you are or how floppy your fringe is – isn’t exactly the sound of Generation Y but The Pursuit may well be the album that changes a few people’s minds.
With a brilliantly loose rock vibe, clever word play and several killer key changes I’m All Over It Now recalls the best of Ben Folds and the showmanship of Mika. It’s no fluke. Wheels is a big life-affirming tune that’s somewhere between Speed Of Sound and Silent Sigh; Not While I’m Around is as rich and soulful as John Legend and Music Is Through successfully incorporates electronica. Best of all though is a classy cover of Rihanna’s Please Don’t Stop The Music.
Boogie it’s OK to like.
