Straight outta Chorlton - a welcome return from ceaselessly impressive one-man electro-pop monster

Critical reaction to previous Jim Noir releases - which generally consists of frothing at the mouth and uttering a few key words like "joyous", "child-like" and "Brian Wilson" - is well-deserved. The one-man band from Greater Manchester achieves the feat of being popular with beard-stroking record shop employees (his early releases are hotly collectable) and Joe Public alike; this appeal has earnt him a formidable reputation. The Brian Wilson comparisons, while stemming from his uncanny knack with vocal harmony, also do well in setting him aside from the current slew of electro-pop singer-songwriters who, by comparison, seem rather washed-out.

This eponymous second album's highlight is almost certainly the excellent, click-ridden, tweaked and polished pop of Alright, but there's invention galore in the rest of the tracks - the needle-skipping prog-funk of What U Gonna Do, the Beatles-tinged crackling of Ships And Clouds, the mutating electronica-turned-surf-pop of Good Old Vinyl. From time to time, experimentation gets in the way and seems a bit clunky (as on Look Around You, which develops into semi-novelty retro) but this is a minor gripe about what is, in all other respects, an extremely good and immediately appealing album. Old-school, forward-looking and utterly charming.
