Kylie digs deep into dance music on mostly-good tenth album

X – Kylie’s tenth album and first full studio work since 2003 – blends electro, house music, hip-hop-tinged pop and some quite experimental electronica for its musical backdrop. It’s a bold move, and although a little over-reaching at times, contains moments of real funky beauty.

While certain songs sound way too samey – aping Madonna’s recent work, but without panache, and relying too much on bleeps and farty basslines – the epic Sensitized, William Orbit-esque The One and crazy electro cut-up Nu-Di-Ty are superb. Even on the weaker tracks, her sheer, winsome Kylie-ness shines through, making X an album worth considering.
