Ex-Sugababe effortlessly trounces competition and broadens appeal even further
Sugababes were always the girl group everybody thought were cool - from their early indie-esque incarnations to the more recent flirtations with neon, R&B and electro, their appeal has always been so broad to find them a market with pop kids and hip scenesters alike. Part of this appeal was almost certainly down to the attitude, which departed member turned solo star Mutya has in abundance - and which elevates her first solo album to lofty heights.
While all of the styles she turns her hand to are successful, Real Girl's best tracks are the sassy, electro and hip-hop tinged pop tracks like Song 4 Mutya, B Boy Baby (which features Amy Winehouse) and Strung Out. Mutya's distinctive, strong voice is fine throughout, and musically this album flirts with alternative styles just enough without every straying too far from the mainstream. This album is a real competitor for any US-produced R&B or pop album put out this year, with a very British element to it. Excellent.
