Noel & Liam & Gem & Andy shine on first album in three years

Seasoned followers of the Gallaghers may have tired of the claim every couple of years that their latest album is their best since (What's The Story) Morning Glory? Finally though, seven albums in, they are living up to the reputation of their back catalogue.

First of all Dig Out Your Soul sounds great, the production is rich and atmospheric without being overblown and gimmicky (a trap they've fallen into in the past) and the songs – with a couple of leaden exceptions at the back end (The Nature Of Reality) – are of a far higher quality. Bag It Up, The Turning, The Shock Of Lightning could have fitted onto any of the previous four Oasis albums and would have been the stand-out tracks by a mile.

The real revelation though is Liam. Here his voice loses none of the menace that's made him one of the most distinctive British singers ever but comes with the added maturity of someone who's figured themselves out.

Not only that but he wrote the best song on the album – the majestic Lennon sampling ballad I'm Outta Time. A brilliant album.
