The Columbian pop queen’s third English album is dangerously good.
With She Wolf, Shakira has made one of the most ridiculously catchy and properly bonkers pop singles of the decade. The good news is that the accompanying album is full of equally wonky genius – second track Did It Again features a hook that sounds like a panting contest between Maria Sharapova and Meg Ryan’s fake orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally. It’s amazing. Blondie-esque rocker Mon Amour features a lengthy curse that her ex and his new girlfriend have a crap holiday in France: “"Hope the French fleas eat you both alive,” she sings. “And your room smells, and the toilet doesn't flush."
Shakira’s talent is she turns these soap opera lyrics into excellent pop songs.
Elsewhere Wyclef Jean guests on the crisply funky Spy, while Long Time and Why Wait provide some new party tunes for your local belly dancing class and Gypsy proves Shakira can do the subtle subdued material too. With just ten tracks (and one a Spanish version of She Wolf) there’s less quantity than most pop albums but just feel the quality.
