Third album from US duo mixes Timbaland, acid house and post-punk to create an infectiously in-yer-face racket

You may think that the supposed "new rave" movement is confined to these shores, but cacophonous US duo Shy Child have actually been flying the flag for America since 2000. Much like their peers Hot Chip, Klaxons and CSS, with whom they've shared many a live bill, playing dance music with a punk aesthetic (plus the odd rave siren) is their raison d'être. Their line-up of Nate Smith on drums and Pete Cafarella on vocals and Eighties keyboard-guitar further gives them an air of the electro White Stripes.

What's intriguing about Shy Child is their debt to such influences as Timbaland's off-kilter, tribal beats, Jamaican dancehall and The Prodigy, best seen on Pressure To Come, Drop The Phone and the truly astounding title track. Over Cafarella's arty, anguished wail, acid house squelches bump shoulders with hard-as-nails, booty-shaking beats to create a refreshingly original disco racket. Its 11 tracks can't quite sustain the infectious energy throughout, but Noise Won't Stop mostly leaves little room to catch your breath.
