Art-rockers !!! (pronounced "chk chk chk", "ungh ungh ungh", "yuck yuck yuck" or whatever monosyllabic utterances you fancy) were admittedly met with something of a cold shoulder by most die-hard fans of Warp Records, the electronic music label to which they were recently signed. It's not hard to see why - their overt retro-rock pretentions can have a tendency to get up your nose more than a twittering army of be-mulletted urban trendies discussing the virtues of pseudo-ironic performance art. This new single, though, is their strongest effort to date; a gloriously funky mix of congas, spiky guitars and slinky bass which has thoroughly redeemed them, earning comparisons with Talking Heads and The Clash along the way. They may fit like a square peg in a round hole alongside their serious electronic labelmates like Autechre and Squarepusher, but hopefully their upcoming date with Franz Ferdinand will find them the audience they deserve.
