While their fans seem to spend most of their energy insisting that Fall Out Boy aren't an emo act ("they R much cLeverer than LAME-ass eMo dude, lisTeN 2 the LYRiCS!!!!!"), the rest of the world are likely to notice only how very generic and average their brand of rock is, whatever sub-genre they tie their flag to (we prefer "mainstremo", personally). The break-neck staccato rock-out of Dance Dance is a case in point - taking the style of Papa Roach and softening the edges with a poppier sensibility, it's briefly diverting and hummably melodic but ultimately pretty forgettable. The marketplace for this kind of stuff is so crowded that the only way to stand out is through sheer inventive brilliance - one area in which FOB are sadly lacking.
