Plummy pop princess plunders production palette for patchy, er, album

Before Groovejet, Sophie Ellis-Bextor was simply the young Chrissy Hynde-soundalike vocalist in terrible indie also-rans theaudience - but, thanks to one catchy club tune and a protracted media tussle with Posh Spice, her name became synonymous with well-produced disco. Given that the same route has since been plundered by the likes of Madonna, it might be time for Ellis-Bextor to consider another reinvention - however, this new album contains no surprises at all.

While songs such as the Human League-esque The Distance Between Us, nice synthy electro number If You Go and ace Euro-disco track China Heart showcase her admittedly excellent, distinctive voice (and commendable diction), the bulk of the rest of the album is simply slightly uncool and over-earnest pop music by numbers with pleasant but unspectacular vocals. While this is a super-glossy piece of work, it does nothing to dispel the image of Sophie Ellis-Bextor as making club music it's OK for your mum to like. By no means bad - but no Groovejet.

More to try: Madonna - Confessions On A Dancefloor Sugababes - Angels With Dirty Faces Rachel Stevens - Come And Get It Annie - Anniemal
