Influential Belgians with a crazily eclectic catalogue push too many buttons

Soulwax have enjoyed critical support from all sides during their career. Firstly, the rock press loved their heavy early days. The dance music fans adored their DJ sets and cheeky mix CDs as, first, The Flying Dewaele Brothers and, latterly 2 Many DJs. And finally, the electro fans loved latter, beat-influenced punk-funk Soulwax tracks. This collection of remixes, with a bonus mix CD thrown in for good measure, covers all of these bases.

It’s a mixed bag indeed – from their crazy hoover-led mix of 808 State’s Dominator (starts well, gets a bit much by the end) to achingly trendy, clanging takes on tracks by the likes of Klaxons, LCD Soundsystem and Gossip (pretty much of a muchness – stompy, tinny, bassy). Some odd choices – like their lovely, funky versions of DJ Shadow’s Six Days and Muscle Museum by Muse – liven up the collection, but wasted efforts like their electro take on Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head are too rooted in their time and already sound a bit dated.
