America’s most fanciable rockers keep going on strong

In an era when rock chick fashion comes courtesy of Top Shop and Kate Moss, where you can download a cover of Britney Spears singing I Love Rock And Roll, and where members of Iron Maiden are commercial air pilots, a bit of sincerity in rock comes like a good hard kick in the crotch with a cowboy boot. Having left previous label Atlantic following the release of the excellent Gold Medal, The Donnas ditch the pop frills and go hell for retro leather.

This album opens with an air-raid siren and a stadium rock, hands-aloft drumbeat, and then descends into pure rock hooks, cowbell solos, “yeah yeah yeah” chorus harmonies, lyrics about how boys are rubbish and just get in the way and guitar solos which would be sexy even if they were being played by old men. In the hands of four glamorous 20-somethings, this is dynamite. Bitchin’ is about as deep and meaningful as the back pocket of a pair of skintight leather pants, but it’s impossible to care when the energy and passion is so infectious.
