Sunderland's raw-pop likely lads return

After being dropped by their major label following a particularly bad case of difficult second-albumitus (a common complaint), the most surprising thing about The Futureheads return on their own self-funded label is how commercial sounding it is.A good idea if you're worried that your music won't be played on the radio is to write a song with the word radio in the title - DJs love it and it's served countless bands well from The Ramones to Supergrass. Thus Radio Heart is a blast or irresistible "wireless"-friendly pop that's typical of this album's straight-to-the-point rough and ready catchiness and willingness to attempt to bend their choppy guitar and ranting harmonies into something more polished.

There's the same sense of urgency as The Jam's early albums - albeit without Paul Weller's articulate anger. There are plenty of great hooks but sadly with every song delivered at the same fierce pace the whole album blurs into one relentless blob. Like all decent radio bands The Futureheads are better in small single-sized doses.
