The first V Festival, held in 1996, was notable for being the first festival in the UK to be split over two sites: Chelmsford and Stafford. Although 1996 was a vintage year for festivals (the last ever Stone Roses performance at Reading, Radiohead debuting OK Computer material at T In The Park), V managed to impress with a strong line-up which included Pulp, The Cardigans and Elastica.
