John Pickard runs for grandfather

John Pickard finished the New York Marathon this weekend (01.11.09) in honour of his grandfather.

The 'Hollyoaks' star - who plays Dominic Reilly in the Channel 4 soap - raised money for the Prostate Cancer Charity and Leonard Cheshire Disability, both of which helped his grandfather during his final days.

John, 31, said: "Both charities have a great personal significance to me. I've been training hard this year and completing my first ever marathon back in April was fantastic. It's great to be able to complete these challenges to raise money and funds for such important causes."

Since he started running this year, John, 32, has also completed the BUPA Great North Run and the Flora London Marathon.

The Prostate Cancer Charity's Head of Community Fundraising, Claire Walsh, said: " 10,000 men die of Prostate cancer each year. John has really helped to raise awareness of the disease."

Leonard Cheshire Disability's Sarah Ball, added: "John has been a fantastic supporter of Leonard Cheshire Disability over the last year. We're all hugely proud of his running achievements."

Spurred by John's efforts, producers of 'Hollyoaks' are offering the chance fans to join the actor in a tour of the soap's set and meet the cast. Anyone who sponsors John for at least £10 will be automatically entered into a draw to win.
