While the vast majority of animals mate out of necessity and part company as soon as the deed is done, there are some creatures that mate for life. We identify nature's monogamous animals.
No animal has been as maligned as the wolf over the centuries; accused of snatching babies, killing livestock, the source of the werewolf myth and seen as vicious killers, in fact the wolf pack is the epitome of the nuclear family.
Wolves by and large mate for life and packs consist of a male-female pair and their pups. The older offspring will even help the mother in looking after the almost helpless newborns.
