Listen up: Lipstick is back with a vengeance, and the colour of the season is red.

Of course, by “red” we mean a range of very different shades, from retro-chic scarlet (think 50s film stars) to deep luxuriant berry tones (for a more subtle and sensual effect). Naturally you’ll have to try different tones before settling on the red to suit you, but avoid anything sparkly or glossy – matte is very definitely in this season.

Top tips on luscious lips

1. Before wielding the lipstick, outline your lips using lip liner to ensure perfect, neat, heart-shaped lips. Then use a lipstick brush to apply colour evenly.

2. Remember: the bolder your lipstick, the less make-up you should apply to the upper part of your face. Keep the eyes subtle, or the net result may scare small children!

3. Pick a more subtle red if you have small lips, as very rich and dark colours can make thin lips look even thinner.
