Why do some great sporting events linger longer in the memory than others? Could it be that we lovingly recall the drama the TV commentator injected? Whether it's a passionate sudden outburst or a carefully-constructed quip. All our top commmentary moments have been loved, imitated and in many cases endure far longer than the moment they describe.

The daddy of all commentary moments. Kenneth Wolstenholme's words, uttered as Geoff Hurst lamped in his hatrick goal to seal England's 1966 World Cup victory, have become as well-known as any Shakespearean or Wildean flourish. For our money, we at VM actually prefer his 'It's twelve inches high, it's made of solid gold, and it means England are champions of the world' as Bobby Moore lifted the trophy.
