'Lewis has brought F1 alive again'
This amazing F1 season of twists and turns never seems to want to go quietly into the night! Now this fuel thing has come up, BMW and Williams either broke the rules and are out of the race or didn't break the rules and are in the race. I just think it's another fu**ing FIA mess and McLaren are totally correct to appeal.
I want an answer!
I want to know what happened and we need to know why BMW and Williams can get away with it. If they were running too cold, it's a big advantage. Whether it's one second or a minute, it doesn't matter. The rules are the rules and you can't break them so I want an answer! If you are one gram underweight you are out and the law's there for a reason. It has to be black and white. Either they're in or they're out and we need to know the exact technicalities of why they never got punished. If they're not legal, they are out and Lewis is a worthy world champion. The fact that the FIA have found three cars running too cool and have not thrown them out and not explained why is embarrassing.
Brain left in the pit lane
As for the race, I think Massa was definitely going to win and was definitely quicker on the day but all Kimi had to do was stay where he did and that's what he did and he didn't make any mistakes and did the job. I don't feel sorry for Lewis at all because the way he went about the race you could definitely see he was 22-years-old. He left his brain in the pit lane and, to be honest, he deserved to be out in the first corner and he deserved to be out at the second corner. The technical hiccup, although unfortunate, was the only unlucky thing about his race.
Listen to Eddie talk about how Lewis Hamilton’s challenge unravelled in Brazil
Lewis didn't learn from his mistake in China and then went straight into his next race and made a similar mistake. He isn't perfect after all! We all couldn't see any weaknesses and then he goes and does something, twice in a row. I think his ego is too big and he didn't want Alonso ahead of him. At the end of the day, he's going to win more world championships and he may still even win this one - it's not over yet!
Winners and losers of 2007
So here goes for my winners and losers of 2007. Hats off to Lewis, he's really brought Formula 1 alive again and he's my driver of the season for sure. Team of the year I'd give to Ferrari because Jean Todt has managed the team much better and it's a better chosen team. Ron Dennis chose what he thought was the best driver in the world and put a rookie with him to learn from him and he got it wrong and failed to control Alonso and, to a lesser extent, Lewis. I think Todt and Ferrari have therefore done the better job as a team. Look what they have done winning both world championships with arguably not the best car.
My moment of the 2007 season was Lewis overtaking Raikkonen at Monza - what a move! My loser of the season? It has to be Fernando Alonso. I just hope that he ends up at Spyker or something! I think he's going to try and stay at McLaren now but Hamilton will be so much stronger than him next year. The only real place that could be a good move for Alonso is Ferrari and that's not available. The guy has proven a few thousand times this year that he's an idiot and he's even speaking out against his own team's appeal.
Has this season been the best ever? In my opinion, no - but I remember the days when Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell were fighting against each other and the racing was amazing. But I guess I'm a little older now and prefer my own era. But hey, hasn't it been brilliant? I'm already looking forward to 2008!
Ciao,
Eddie Irvine.
