A1GP comes to Brands Hatch

Britain's Robbie Kerr leads a colourful field

This weekend a very modern motor sport series will take over a very historic circuit. A1GP is all about supporting your nation – getting behind your country. And if Great Britain’s Robbie Kerr manages to win on home soil, then the celebrations will be massive.

You see, no team has won their home race – some have come close, Jonny Reid finished on the podium in New Zealand and Tomas Enge finished 2nd in Brno, but that is as near as anyone has got – so far! Twenty one events ago, when A1GP was last at Brands Hatch, Robbie was leading the race when a technical problem left the dream shattered and the crowd in shock. Now though could things be about to change?

GBR has won 2 races in the last 2 rounds, Ollie Jarvis took the feature race in Mexico City whilst Robbie got his maiden victory last time out in Shanghai. But if anyone knows Brands Hatch like the back of his proverbial hand, it is Robbie Kerr.

The sweeping track is one of the toughest for drivers to get their heads, and indeed cars round. Paddock hill bend is one of the greatest motor sport spectacles, especially when things go wrong, as happened last year when Lebanon’s Khalil Beschir rolled spectacularly after touching with Team Italy.

The pit lane is where I will be during the race and that is quite scary too. It is pretty tight in there and when the cars come in to pit, well I don’t want to be standing in the wrong place put it that way. Pit-stops, as always, will be crucial.

Team Germany and rising star Nico Hulkenburg may already have won the championship, but places for the rest of the best remain wide open. Team Great Britain could still pip New Zealand for 2nd in the championship. And former F1 driver Alex Yoong is determined to bag the 4th place position for emerging motor sport nation Malaysia.

For die hard motor fans who like to be ahead of the game or see their heroes of former years it is an ideal weekend. Three former World Champions in Emerson Fittipaldi and John Surtees who have both won at Brands Hatch, along with Alan Jones will be there in their role of Team Boss of their respective countries. The key though is spotting the stars of the future. And believe me there are many; Nico for Germany, Sebastien Buemi for Switzerland and Renger van der Zande for the Netherlands all have promising futures.

With teams ranging from Pakistan and Lebanon, to countries like Brazil and Britain who are steeped in motor sport history, fighting their way round one of the most exciting circuits in motor sport, there is no doubt that Brands Hatch is the place to be this weekend.
