Haiti
Why go there? Haiti shares an island with tropical paradise Dominican Republic. Lush and mountainous, Haiti isn't short of scenery or gorgeous white sandy beaches. So far, so good.
It should be OK because: Tourists are a rarity and most people are friendly. At least you will have the sympathy of the locals after you've been ripped off again.
It might not be OK because: The Foreign Office advises against visiting "because of the threat to personal security". Politically unstable, Haiti can be a lawless zone at times with looting, carjacking, kidnapping and unofficial roadblocks commonplace. It lacks the roads, hotels and facilities that make a holiday comfortable - this is a destination for the hardened traveller.
