Tangier
Where it is: Well spotted! Tangier is not in Spain at all. It lies just across the Strait of Gibraltar, on Morocco's northern tip.
What's the attraction?
Your summer break in Spain will sound all the more impressive if you can say you spent a day or two in Africa as well. In little over an hour you can get from Algeciras or Gibraltar over to the famous Moroccan city.
Like many seaports, it's a sprawling, bustling and well-weathered place that oozes character.
Upmarket hotels are rapidly popping up in town, but Tangier retains the old world charm that attracted literary types like Capote and Fleming and is thought to have been the inspiration for the cinema classic that is Casablanca. Soak up the atmosphere in the Grand Socco Market Square and Place de France, sample the delicious local cuisine or head along the bach to reach the impressive Grottes d'Hercule cave.
