Macmillan is not just about nurses. We use the money our supporters raise to fund a wide range of services. These provide vital practical, emotional, medical and financial support to people affected by cancer.
But what do we mean by practical, emotional, medical and financial support?
Practical supportWhen you have cancer, even the little things can become hard. We provide practical support to help people cope with every day life, for example, a lift to hospital, help with the garden or some precious time off for a carer.
Emotional supportDealing with the feelings and changes that cancer brings can be a lonely experience, even if you are surrounded by loved ones. We provide emotional support, through our CancerLine, website, support groups and trained professionals to help people cope with the stress, isolation and uncertainty that cancer can bring.
Financial supportWhen you or someone close to you has been diagnosed with cancer, money might not be one of the first things you think about. But having cancer can be expensive in ways you may never have expected, with costs that you hadn’t considered. We provide information, benefits advice and even grants to help with those additional costs, like heating bills or travel costs.
Not forgetting the medical support
For many people affected by cancer, Macmillan nurses are a valued and trusted source of expert information, advice and support. There are over 3,000 Macmillan nurses across the UK, working both in hospitals and in the community. We also fund other specialist healthcare professionals such as doctors, dietitians and occupational therapists and build cancer care centres.
And on top of all of that, we are also a force for change, working to improve cancer care. We listen to people affected by cancer and work together with them to improve cancer care and make a positive difference to the lives of people affected by cancer. This could be anything from getting a coffee machine installed in a waiting room, to bringing about changes in the law.
As you can see, we provide a whole range of support to help improve people’s lives and push to improve cancer care throughout the UK. It’s work we're proud of. And work you should feel proud of supporting. Thank you.
