Coronation Street fans slam soap bosses for recycling actor
'Coronation Street' fans have slammed soap bosses after they recycled an actor to play a major new character.
Eagle-eyed viewers of the ITV soap took to Twitter to complain after Joe Duttine - who portrayed detective Max Carr in the programme for four months in 2010 - re-appeared on the show last week as Tim Metcalfe, the biological father of adopted 12-year-old schoolgirl Faye Windass (Ellie Leach).
Joe became well known as the police officer interrogating Gail Platt (Helen Worth) when she was arrested for murdering husband Joe McIntyre (Reece Dinsdale).
One fan tweeted: ''#Coronation Street seems to be reusing its bank of actors over and over again. #TimMetcalfe.(sic)''
Another wrote: ''Do the producers think we'll have forgotten last time Joe Duttine was in #corrie he played a policeman?(sic)''
But a 'Coronation Street' spokesman insists Joe's latest role sees him bringing ''something completely different'' to the ITV soap.
He told The Sun newspaper: ''Joe is a talented actor who brings something completely different to the role of Tim Metcalfe than he did to his previous role.''
Meanwhile, 'Coronation Street' fans have been busy creating a campaign to free Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) after the hapless mechanic was arrested when his former fiancee Kirsty Soames (Natalie Gumede) lied to police saying he had been abusing her when she is the one who has been abusing him for months.
A Twitter campaign has been launched with fans posting images of 'Free Tyrone' signs they have created on vans and with cat food, while one even uploaded a photograph of Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi wearing a T-shirt with the words 'Free Tyrone' superimposed onto the garment.
It comes after The Sun newspaper launched a 'Free Deirdre' campaign in 1998 - which then-Prime Minister Tony Blair joined in - when one of the soap's storylines saw Deirdre Rachid (Anne Kirkbride) wrongly imprisoned for mortgage and credit card fraud.28-01-2013
