What's next for Jonathan Ross?

Witty national treasure or overpaid, offensive menace?

Regardless of your own view on Jonathan Ross, his freshly announced departure from the Beeb will leave a huge void to fill with Graham Norton or Alan Carr supposedly in line to take over the Friday night nattering.

But what of Ross’s own future - free from guzzling large chunks of the licence fee and being bound by tight BBC regulations? We look at what might be in store for the foppish, film-loving chat show host…

On Thursday morning, Ross declared via his Twitter account that he is set to have some meetings in LA. Could this mean that he’s eyeing up the opportunity to become the next Letterman or Leno across the shores? It looks plausible, but just bear in mind that the United States is a nation where any crude or sexual references are a big no-no (yet Jack Bauer torturing people is fine).

So Ross would either have to be hugely neutered with his quips or risk the wrath of the Yanks.

However, a move to a rival British broadcaster is also a distinct possibility. Sky has a huge chequebook, although Ross’s ego is unlikely to tolerate the huge decrease in viewing figures that would inevitably occur with the move to a subscription channel. Still, look how well Ross Kemp has flourished at Sky.
