How to propose

This year, why not come to your senses and pop the big question to the one that rocks your world? With 2008 being a leap year it means the ladies can get in on the action and organise a special proposal.

We've got some dos and don'ts on how to make your proposal memorable.

Dos:

  • Propose simply because you want to, you love them and want to spend the rest of your life with them. Not because of convenience, pressure or financial reasons.
  • Ask one of the in-laws for permission. This time-honoured tradition will earn you respect and extra brownie points.
  • If you're unsure of what engagement ring to buy then simply ask advice from a family member or friend. Ideally pick it out yourself so that your partner is the first one to see it, but keep the receipt!
  • Try and share your exciting plans with as few people as possible, giving you and your partner the chance to announce your happy news together.
  • In the run up to your proposal, make sure any niggly issues between you and your partner are resolved.
  • Most importantly be yourself - make your proposal honest, heartfelt and passionate.

Don'ts:

  • Don't propose spontaneously when you're drunk. It won't be taken seriously.
  • Propose within a week/night/hour of your first meeting. You have to know someone very well to be sure you're happy with spending the rest of your life with them.
  • Avoid starting your proposal with insensitive clichés such as "We might as well", "We're not getting any younger", "I've sowed my wild oats" etc.
