How is your credit file used for fraud?

Fraudsters will use genuine people’s identity and good credit standing to steal finance, goods or services.

Using personal information, fraudsters will impersonate their victims to obtain valuable items that can easily be converted into cash. This may include mobile phones, loans or vehicles.

How can you protect yourself against this?

  • You should regularly get a copy of your credit file and check it for entries you don’t recognise.  
  • If you find accounts that don’t belong to you or other incorrect information, follow the instructions to dispute them. You can ask for free copies of your credit reports. If you’re denied credit because of information in a credit report, you can ask the credit bureau that the report came from for a free copy of your credit file. If you’re the victim of identity theft, you can ask all three of the major credit bureaus for free copies of your reports. Contact them on: 0800 014 2955 for Equifax, 0800 013 8888 for Experian, 0330 024 7574 for TransUnion.
  • If you have been a victim of fraud, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit www.actionfraud.police.uk *. Action Fraud is the reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Reports of fraud and any other financial crime in Scotland should be reported to Police via 101. However, if debit cards, online banking or cheques are involved in the scam your first step should to contact your bank or credit card company.

Consider an Identity Protection Service

Consider availing of an identity protection service. ProtectMyID monitors your Experian credit report and alerts you by email or SMS to potential fraudulent activity.  Another service to consider is the CIFAS protective registration. CIFAS is the UK national fraud database.
