It's been 4 years since Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring first bonded over a school seating plan and in that time Heartstopper has become one of Netflix's most cherished teenage love stories.
Now, the story that began with a chance encounter at Truham Grammar is coming to an end – not with a fourth season, but with a single, feature-length finale.
Heartstopper Forever arrives on Netflix on Friday 17 July, exactly four years to the day since the show's first season premiered and introduced audiences to Alice Oseman's heartfelt world.
Here's everything you need to know about the film, including its release date, returning cast and what to expect from the final chapter of the Heartstopper story.
The story of Heartstopper so far
Across three seasons, Heartstopper has followed rugby player Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and quietly artistic Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) as they went from an unlikely friendship to first love, all set against the backdrop of Truham Grammar School and its sister school, Higgs.
Around them, a tight-knit group of friends – Tao (William Gao), Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), Isaac (Tobie Donovan) – have been on their own journeys, from navigating everything from love to identity to mental health.
By the end of season 3, Nick and Charlie were more settled than ever, having faced some of their biggest challenges together and come out stronger on the other side. Several of their friends had reached important turning points too, with romances deepening, futures starting to take shape and long-held insecurities finally being confronted.

But real life was always waiting in the wings, and Heartstopper Forever picks up as school days begin to fade into memory, giving way to a far bigger, scarier and far less certain chapter of their lives: adulthood.
As university plans, long-distance relationships, career ambitions and questions about the future start to pull the friends in different directions, they must figure out what growing up really means – and whether the bonds they've built can survive the changes ahead.
Here's what we know about Heartstopper Forever so far...
Heartstopper Forever: the final chapter
Written by series creator and graphic novelist Alice Oseman and directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, Colette), the film draws on the 6th and final volume of Oseman's graphic novels, along with her Nick and Charlie novella, to bring the screen adaptation to a close.
That final graphic novel, Heartstopper Volume 6, hit shelves 2 July 2026, so there’s plenty of time for anyone who wants to read the ending before watching the film.
It's a big shift in format for a show that's always unfolded episode by episode, but Oseman has been clear that the change was ultimately a creative choice.
)
The film is set to picksup with the couple still very much together, but facing a new kind of pressure: Nick is getting ready to head off to university, while Charlie stays behind to find his footing at school without him nearby.
Navigating the changes that come with a newly long-distance relationship creates doubt and pushes them into uncertain territory. Their friends, meanwhile, are dealing with their own ups and downs as everyone works out what growing up is really like.
Oseman has described the film as an exploration of "the ordinary magic of our everyday lives", alongside bigger themes of time, memory and change. It's a noticeably more reflective, grown-up register for a story that started out with the fizzy excitement of a first crush.
Why choose a feature-length finale?
Heartstopper may not be returning for another season, but Nick and Charlie's story is far from over. Instead, the beloved coming-of-age hit is getting the big-screen treatment with a feature-length finale.
Creator Alice Oseman has revealed that the film marks "a big change from what we know", opening up exciting new storytelling possibilities. Speaking to Netflix's Tudum, Oseman highlighted how the movie format offers the freedom to bring the story to life in a fresh way, without being tied to episode breaks or cliffhanger endings.
With more time to let key moments unfold naturally, fans can look forward to an emotional and cinematic send-off that gives Nick and Charlie's journey the heartfelt conclusion it deserves.
There's even more reason to get excited, as stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke are stepping into new roles behind the camera as executive producers. Their involvement will help shape the final chapter, which promises to celebrate the romance, friendship and warmth that made Heartstopper a global phenomenon.
Which cast members are returning for the finale?
Most of the regular cast are returning for the finale, including Joe Locke, Kit Connor, William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Jenny Walser, Rhea Norwood and Leila Khan, alongside Fisayo Akinade and Nima Taleghani as teachers Mr Ajayi and Mr Farouk.
)
There is one major change, however: Olivia Colman will not be returning as Nick's mum, Sarah Nelson, with Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Ludwig) stepping into the role instead.
Oseman explained that keeping Sarah out of the story entirely wasn't an option, since it felt nonsensical for her to be absent from this final chapter given some of what Nick goes through. Veteran actor Derek Jacobi (I, Claudius, Last Tango In Halifax) also joins the cast in a cameo role.
Heartstopper Forever release date and how to watch
Heartstopper Forever debuts globally on Netflix (Apps > Netflix) Friday 17 July 2026.
If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to revisit the journey from the beginning. All three seasons of Heartstopper are available to stream on Netflix now, charting the highs and lows of Nick and Charlie’s relationship, alongside the equally heartfelt stories of Tao, Elle, Tara, Darcy and Isaac.
The Heartstopper Forever trailer
When the first trailer arrived in June, it came with an emotional surprise: the first-ever use of "Stupid Song", a brand-new track from Olivia Rodrigo's upcoming album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love. It's not the first crossover between the two – Rodrigo's song "good 4 u" featured in the show back in season 3 – but this exclusive premiere gave fans another reason to reach for the tissues before the film has even landed.
Amid the trailer's flashes of prom, packed suitcases and difficult conversations, one line captures what Heartstopper has always been about: "we built it, and it built us."
