“They’re running scared from fighting this guy.” It’s a flattering endorsement of elite boxing prospect Moses Itauma by former WBC world heavyweight title challenger Dillian Whyte. He’s also the man Itauma will face next in the ring in a big British heavyweight battle live on DAZN with Virgin Media.
In the build-up to this fight, Whyte says he had been offered rematches with Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker – two bouts that would have undoubtedly earned the 37-year-old enormous paydays. But he says it’s the opportunity to face “the best fighter since Mike Tyson” that has brought him to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.
There is a growing belief that Itauma represents the future of the division. Victory would only underline that conviction and add to the young heavyweight’s emerging legend.
Yet, when you’re up against a boxer in Whyte who has fought the best of them – Tyson Fury, Joshua, Parker, Derek Chisora – and has often prevailed, the potential rewards come with undoubted risk. Should Itauma defeat Whyte, it would represent an impressive scalp. But will the sizable step up for the unbeaten 20-year-old prove too much?
With Nick Ball defending his WBA featherweight title against Sam Goodman as the co-main event, plus Raymond Ford v Abraham Nova, Filip Hrgović v David Adeleye and Hayato Tsutaumi v Qais Ashfaq, it’s set to be a massive night of boxing.
You can watch Moses Itauma v Dillian Whyte and all the fights live on DAZN with Virgin Media, starting at 5pm on Saturday 16 August. Read on for everything you need to know ahead of this massive event, including how to order the fight on Virgin TV.
What’s the background to the Moses Itauma v Dillian Whyte fight?
)
Moses Itauma
The line of people queuing up to heap praise on Itauma is long, and their credentials are unquestionable – and that includes his opponent. He’s blown away everyone he’s faced (12-0, 10 KOs), and the Slovakia-born Kent boxer has barely lost a round during his career as an amateur and then pro.
You need to go back as far as July 2023 for the last time an opponent took Itauma past the second round. Of his 10 KOs, seven of those opponents fell in the first round, while the other three bowed out one round later. His most recent fight in May saw him deliver a brutal two-round knockout against American Mike Balogun.
In his fledgling career, we’ve learned that Itauma is a boxer with explosive punch power and technical ability. His approach in the ring is often unpredictable due to his ability to stay patient and calculate his every move with great precision. And he tends to wrap up fights quickly.
But while many boxing pundits are already mentally writing the biopic about Itauma’s rise to the top of the sport, two-time heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury wants us to err on the side of caution, reminding everyone that this fight still represents a “big step up for Moses because he hasn’t really fought anyone on Dillian’s level.”
For all Itauma’s success, that’s certainly true. He wouldn’t be the first hot prospect to fall against world-class opposition, with Fury warning of a repeat of what happened last year when the highly touted Jared Anderson showed his inexperience against the 31-year-old Martin Bakole, who stopped him in the fifth round of their bout.
And yet despite all the cautionary tales, Itauma will enter the ring in Riyadh as the overwhelming favourite to overcome Whyte. It should be some contest.
)
Dillian Whyte
Whyte was once the man knocking on the door of heavyweight world glory – a proven contender who shared the ring with some of the sport’s most powerful boxers. But he lines up in Riyadh against an unbeaten and arguably unproven prospect, not as the favourite, but as the underdog with everything to prove.
Whyte’s road back to the big stage has been far from smooth. His planned bout with Joe Joyce was scrapped in March after an injury in training. It meant Whyte has not fought since his return to action in December 2024, when he stopped little-known Ghanaian fighter Ebenezer Tetteh.
While that win marked his first appearance in over a year, it did little to answer the lingering questions about where Whyte stands in the current heavyweight landscape. His last outings against elite opposition – a rematch against Alexander Povetkin and a defeat to Tyson Fury – feel like a long time ago.
But this fight is no dead rubber, and the former world title challenger is no stranger to adversity. He’s built his career on grit, resilience and a punishing left hook – the same shot that floored the likes of Derek Chisora and Lucas Browne. It’s a punch Itauma should be wary of.
Whether Whyte can land that punch against his lightning-fast and younger opponent is another matter. In facing Itauma, he’s up against a fighter brimming with confidence, speed and technical precision. More than that, Itauma wants a statement win.
Still, if there’s one thing we know about Dillian Whyte, it’s that he’s never out of a fight. He’s come through fire before, and he’ll be banking on experience, power and sheer determination to derail boxing’s latest sensation. If he can survive Itauma’s typical early onslaught, then we truly have a fight on our hands.
How do Moses Itauma and Dillian Whyte measure up?
Who’s on the Moses Itauma v Dillian Whyte fight card?
Alongside this heavyweight battle, the full fight card is looking super-strong as we’ve come to expect from Riyadh Season.
Liverpudlian Nick Ball returns to Saudi Arabia with his all-action style, intent on proving himself the best featherweight in the world and setting up a mouthwatering encounter with Japanese superstar and undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue.
But he’ll have to overcome Sam Goodman. Like Ball, Goodman takes an undefeated record into this fight, but the Aussie has yet to compete at the same level, making the fight even more unpredictable – and frankly unmissable.
Meanwhile, Raymond Ford wants to edge closer to a title shot against WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster. Standing in his way is Abraham Nova, a late replacement as Anthony Cacace pulled out of their bout because of a back injury.
Filip Hrgović and David Adeleye are both looking to exorcise demons from past fights in Riyadh. For Hrgović, it was his momentum-sapping defeat against Daniel Dubois. Adeleye, meanwhile, will want to put his knockout at the hands of Fabio Wardley behind him.
Hayato Tsutsumi will also take on Qais Ashfaq over 10 rounds in the super featherweight division to complete the card.
