It might mean swapping your Aperol spritz for a pumpkin spice latte, but TV always understands the assignment during this time of the year: saving the best ’til (almost) last. Hit the sofa and get ready to fall in love with the 30 best new shows and returning favourites coming soon to Virgin TV. Let’s get into it…

A woman fights to change the double jeopardy law in the hope of seeing her daughter’s murderer convicted in this fact-based drama.

Why we’re excited: It promises to be another emotionally stirring battle against injustice with a memorable central performance in the vein of Mr Bates Vs The Post Office.

The Paper

An energetic new editor takes over a failing provincial newspaper staffed by volunteers with varying degrees of competence.

Why we’re excited: It’s a spin-off from the US version of The Office, with many of the same creatives involved and the Gervais/Merchant seal of approval. Plus – Oscar!

Why we’re excited: Robin Wright – who also directs – is always a sign of quality, and it’s an adaptation of British author Michelle Frances’ well-reviewed debut novel, a gripping psychological thriller.

Murder Before Evensong

A clergyman in a sleepy English village gets caught up in criminal investigations and finds he has a knack for detective work.

Stars: Matthew Lewis (All Creatures Great And Small), Amanda Redman (New Tricks), Amit Shah (Happy Valley), Adam James (Wicked)

Why we’re excited: It’s adapted from Rev Richard Coles’ hugely successful novels and should be cosier than sitting with a hot water bottle in front of a roaring fire – plus we’re delighted to see former Neville Longbottom actor Matthew Lewis get a starring role.

Frauds

A terminally ill con artist teams up with an old colleague to pull off one last heist.

Stars: Suranne Jones (Vigil), Jodie Whittaker (Toxic Town), Elizabeth Berrington (Lost Boys And Fairies), Lee Boardman (Bancroft)

Why we’re excited: Like this summer’s The Assassin, it’s the sort of bonkers premise that usually delivers outrageously entertaining TV – especially when headed by two powerhouses like Jones and Whittaker.

Mitchell & Webb Are Not Helping

David Mitchell and Robert Webb in Mitchell & Webb Are Not Helping, coming to Channel 4 later this autumn.

David Mitchell and Robert Webb return to sketch comedy for the first time since That Mitchell And Webb Look ended – gulp – 15 years ago.

Why we’re excited: That’s Numberwang! Mitchell and Webb have created some of the most indelible comic sketches of the 20th-century – and they’ve got even more top talent on board with this one.

Trespasses

A dangerous love affair unfolds against a backdrop of conflict in 1970s Northern Ireland.

Why we’re excited: It’s based on Louise Kennedy’s award-winning novel, and we’re all in for a bit of love-across-the-divide romance.

The Forsytes

A new six-part adaptation of the early 20th-century John Galsworthy novels chronicling a family saga.

Why we’re excited: After Gibson wowed us as Doctor Who’s Ruby Sunday, we can’t wait to see her in a lavish period drama. Writer Debbie Horsfield is responsible for the much-missed Poldark.

Kim Kardashian and Naomi Watts in All’s Fair, coming to Disney+ later this autumn.

Riot Women

Five Yorkshire women form a punk band to win a talent contest and realise what was missing from their lives.

Why we’re excited: Happy Valley-shaped hole in your life? This marks the return of writer Sally Wainwright and promises to be far less disturbing.

The Hack

The phone-hacking scandal gets the Mr Jones Vs The Post Office treatment in this dramatisation of the investigation into journalistic and police corruption.

Why we’re excited: We’re prepared to be filled with righteous indignation all over again at the nefarious tabloid practices – and the involvement of TV heavyweights Tennant, Jones and Carlyle, plus writer Jack Thorne, is an exciting one.

Film Club

Two best friends love their weekly movie night, but when Noa announces he’s moving away, Evie’s mental health suffers in this comedy drama.

A team of investigators are tasked with capturing some of the most notorious killers in history, who have just escaped from a top-secret prison.

Why we’re excited: The Hunting Party has already been a big smash-hit across the pond with rave reviews, and a twisty thriller is our favourite way to spend a cosy autumnal evening in front of the box.

The War Between The Land And The Sea

Russell Tovey in The War Between The Land And The Sea, coming to BBC One later this autumn.

The Doctor Who prequel follows UNIT as they try to stop a war waging between humanity and a mysterious ancient species that has surfaced from the sea.

Why we’re excited: Creator Taylor Sheridan specialises in these muscular American sagas (Yellowstone, Tulsa King et al) and the first season didn’t disappoint, with Thornton in storming form as the maverick Tommy Norris.
