Dexter Morgan is back. While you can’t keep a good man down, it seems you also can’t keep a serial killer down either. Which is great for fans of Michael C Hall’s sinister antihero, but not so great for criminals about to face Dexter’s twisted form of justice.

Following the shocking and seemingly conclusive events of the acclaimed miniseries Dexter: New Blood – the continuation of the main Dexter series set 10 years later – this new series picks up the action after just a few weeks have passed.

Having miraculously recovered from his near-fatal gunshot wound, Dexter is in New York City chasing his awol son Harrison (Jack Alcott, Poker Face), with Captain Angel Batista (David Zayas, Gotham) hot on their tails from way down in Miami.

Dexter: Resurrection has a big cast of returning characters and new ones, plus multiple seasons planned. So whether you’re a fan of the OG series and Dexter: New Blood, you got hooked on the prequel Dexter: Original Sin or you’re coming in fresh to the franchise, you’re not going to want to miss this new chapter.

We break down all you need to know about it, plus take our ultimate fan quiz to find out if you’re a Dexter super fan. It slays…

Dexter: Resurrection release date

Dexter: Resurrection season 1 will premiere on Paramount+ in the UK on Friday 11 July 2025, with two episodes dropping at once. The season will then move into a one-episode-per-week release schedule until its final episode on Friday 5 September 2025.

All Virgin Media customers with our Stream box or Virgin TV 360 can get Paramount+ by logging in on the box. Don’t have a subscription? Sign up and you can get a seven-day free trial, then it’s £6.99 per month thereafter.

What is Dexter: Resurrection about?

David Zayas returns as Angel Batista in Dexter: Resurrection.

Before we start, this a spoiler warning for Dexter: New Blood. If you don’t want the ending of that series spoiled, then click away now from this page. Go and stream it on Paramount+ and then come back. You done? OK, you were warned…

So, if your jaw is still on the floor: no, Dexter did not die, despite taking a seemingly fatal bullet to the chest from his own son. After Dexter broke his code and killed Logan, an innocent man, Harrison shot Dexter at Dexter’s own urging. The killer’s son then drove out of town, never to be seen again. Or so we thought.

Dexter: Resurrection picks up approximately 10 weeks after the shooting. Waking up from a coma, Dexter learns Harrison is missing without a trace. Consumed by guilt, he sets off for New York City, determined to find his son and make things right.

But redemption doesn’t come easily. When Miami Metro’s Angel Batista shows up with questions, Dexter realises his dark past is closing in fast. As father and son confront their inner demons in the Big Apple, they soon discover the darkness runs deeper than they ever imagined – and that the only way out is together.

Also, Dexter isn’t the only killer in town…

Dexter: Resurrection cast

Neil Patrick Harris plays a hired killer in Dexter: Resurrection.

There’s a stacked cast in Dexter: Resurrection. Michael C Hall returns as the chilling Dexter Morgan alongside Jack Alcott as his son, Harrison.

Fans of the original Dexter series will be delighted to learn that David Zayas is returning to the role of Angel Batista, now Captain of Homicide in the Miami Metro Police Department. As a sergeant and then lieutenant, he worked closely with Dexter during cases, often teaming up with him for his expert advice on serial killers.

Also returning to the franchise is James Remar as Harry Morgan, Dexter’s deceased dad and the man who instilled the “Code of Harry” – the rules Dexter (mostly) abides by during his killings in controlling his “Dark Passenger” persona.

The new faces in the franchise are just as exciting. Joining the series is Kill Bill’s Uma Thurman, an actress who is not unfamiliar with playing characters with a thirst for personal justice. Here she plays an ex-Special Ops officer who is now head of security for enigmatic billionaire Leon Prater.

Prater is played by Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage. To the world, Leon is a generous philanthropist, but behind his polished exterior lies dark intrigue – one that involves a band of serial killers played by David Dastmalchian, Eric Stonestreet, Krysten Ritter and Neil Patrick Harris.

How is Dexter alive in Resurrection?

How is Dexter alive in Dexter: Resurrection?

It’s not unusual for classic TV antiheroes to be offed – think Walter White in Breaking Bad – in a very definitive, no-backsies way. So it was a shock but perhaps not a surprise in New Blood when Dexter’s son Harrison seemingly shot him dead in cold blood.

However, you know by now that he survived. But how? In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Clyde Phillips revealed that the frigid temperatures at Iron Lake slowed Dexter’s blood loss and saved his life.

He said: “As we will learn at the beginning of Resurrection, if Dexter had been shot on a summer’s day, he would have died. But he was shot in zero-degree temperature in the snow. He didn’t bleed out and they were able to save him. That’s how we were able to resurrect him.”

Do I need to watch Dexter or Dexter: New Blood first?

It’ll always be true of any long-running franchise that watching every episode or movie will enrich what comes next. But you don’t need to have seen the whole Dexter saga to watch this new series – showrunnner Clyde Phillips bills Resurrection as a “blank slate”.

That means you can jump into this series and still enjoy it without having to work your way through eight seasons, prequel miniseries Original Sin and the recent continuation New Blood beforehand.

Equally, as characters with deep meaning to Dexter lore return, there will still be extra layers and Easter eggs for long-standing fans to enjoy.

What Dexter should I watch first?

Since the original series Dexter (2006-2013), there have been three other shows based in the Dexterverse. These are Dexter: New Blood, Dexter: Original Sin and now Dexter: Resurrection.

While New Blood and Resurrection are continuations of the original story – with New Blood set 10 years after the original series and Resurrection picking up just 10 weeks after New BloodOriginal Sin is a prequel set in 1991, 15 years before the first season of Dexter. Still with us?

While that might sound confusing, the correct order to watch the series is in order it was shown. That’s because the ending of New Blood – with Dexter fighting for his life – is the incident that prompts the flashbacks as the serial killer remembers his youth. So if you’re planning to gorge on it all, you should watch the series in this order:

  • Dexter

  • Dexter: New Blood

  • Dexter: Original Sin

  • Dexter: Resurrection
