One Battle After Another
Premium release. Buy or rent now. Cert 15
One Battle After Another was lavished with five-star reviews by critics who loved its bold mix of drama, comedy, drama and sheer unrestrained entertainment. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) plays Bob, an idealistic but ineffective revolutionary whose partner Perfidia (Teyana Taylor, Straw) is far more successful – but her manipulation of a military officer (Sean Penn, Milk) leads to a long-lasting grudge that dogs the pair for years. Beautifully shot by acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood), it fires off satirical points at numerous targets but its cleverness never gets in the way of large-scale cinematic thrills. A rare treat.
Black Phone 2
)
Premium release. Buy or rent now. Cert 18
The first film, based on a short story by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King), was a surprise hit in 2021 and the sequel ups the stakes by stranding our sibling heroes Finney (Mason Thames, How To Train Your Dragon) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw, Secrets Of Sulphur Springs) in a creepy mountain camp where the ghostly presence of the serial killer known as the Grabber (Ethan Hawke, Leave The World Behind) lingers. Finney hears a spooky voice on the end of a phone and when the Grabber starts to attack Gwen in her dreams, they resolve to figure out the mystery and banish him for good. Atmospheric and shocking, it hit No1 at the US box office on its release last month.
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues
Buy or rent now. Cert 15
It might be four decades on but this sequel to the classic mockumentary – or, if you will, rockumentary – feels entirely natural, because what could be more normal than a washed-up rock band putting on a lucrative reunion gig? Spinal Tap members Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) have long since gone their separate ways, but the lure of a revival proves too strong to resist. Cue a string of gags both deft and silly as the old geezers get back on stage: the nostalgia is strong, sure, but Spinal Tap II should win new fans as well, not least thanks to the amazing musician cameos.
Him

Premium release. Buy or rent now. Cert 18
It’s not exactly a horror movie, but this bizarre psychological thriller – produced by Jordan Peele, writer/director of Get Out and Us – will definitely give you the creeps. Cam (Tyriq Withers, I Know What You Did Last Summer) is an aspiring American football star who gets the chance to train with his hero Isaiah (Marlon Wayans, The Heat) at a remote compound. Will a strange incident in which Cam is attacked by a figure in a goat costume return to haunt him? You bet it will, and once his training regime gets under way, things only get more weird. Julia Fox (Uncut Gems) also stars.
Plainclothes
Buy or rent now. Cert 15
In this 1990s-set drama, Tom Blyth (The Hunger Games: A Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes) plays Lucas, a New York police officer tasked with entrapping gay men in public toilets at a shopping mall. But Lucas is having doubts about his own sexuality and his undercover work brings him into close contact with Andrew (Russell Tovey, Years And Years), unearthing feelings that Lucas isn’t ready for. Do they have a future together? With innovative use of CCTV-style video by first-time writer/director Carmen Emmi, this is heartfelt and compelling.
Shell
)
Buy or rent now. Cert 15
Shell teams Elisabeth Moss with her The Handmaid’s Tale co-star Max Minghella, who directs this disturbing leftfield thriller with shades of the Oscar-nominated The Substance, although the two films take different approaches to their subject. Moss plays an actor who’s tempted by a rejuvenating surgical process – but when the doctor who performed it is fired and the friend who recommended it disappears, she fears she’s been duped. Especially when ugly blemishes appear on her skin… Kate Hudson (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Kaia Gerber (Bottoms) and musician Este Haim co-star in this disturbing and febrile movie.
I Swear
)
Buy or rent from Monday 24 November. Cert 15
John Davidson, the subject of the groundbreaking 1989 TV documentary John’s Not Mad, is the inspiration for this uplifting British film. Robert Aramayo (Behind Her Eyes) portrays the Glasgow teenager who is shunned or abused because he exhibits tics associated with Tourette’s syndrome. His life begins to change when a kind family friend (Maxine Peake, Anne) introduces him to local caretaker Tommy (Peter Mullan, Payback), who makes it his mission to educate people about the syndrome. With a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating from both critics and audiences, it’s both moving and funny – even if we definitely can’t include the trailer here…
Good Boy
)
Premium release. Buy or rent from Monday 24 November. Cert 15
Indy is staying with his friend Todd, who’s recuperating from illness, in a remote cabin but starts to feel unsettled when he hears strange noises at night. Indy’s fear is that Todd is succumbing to the malevolent presence in the house, but his only choice is to stick by Todd’s side, and that’s because – plot twist! – Indy is a dog. A real dog, in fact: there’s no CGI or AI trickery here, as we see the horror played out through Indy’s eyes in an innovative chiller made with intelligence and flair.
Urchin
Premium release. Buy or rent from Monday 24 November. Cert 15
After Where The Crawdads Sing, The Iron Claw, Babygirl and more, critical darling Harris Dickinson had his rise to stardom confirmed when he was cast as John Lennon in the upcoming quartet of Beatles biopics. But the far more low-key Urchin is his feature directorial debut, starring Frank Dillane (Fear The Walking Dead) as Mike, a homeless man who’s doing everything he can to get his life back on track.
