You don’t need jump scares to get your heart racing – grab the popcorn, dims the lights and prepare to be spooked.Horror films with all the thrills but no scares

What makes a good horror film?

You don't need a jump scare to make a good horror film! There's loads of terrifyingly good horror films that makes your heart race, your palms sweat but keep you hooked in all the same way. When a horror film is done right, it lingers with you and makes you think, even after the credits have finished rolling.

Here's five aspects every good horror film does right:

The best horror movies don’t just make you flinch; they make you feel something. Whether you feel sheer panic, slowly creeping dread or a slow realisation something bad is going to happen, a great horror film plays with your mind long after the credits roll.

Whether you resonate with them or not, we always root for the characters in horror films. Escaping the villain and getting a happy ending is ideal, but nothing hits harder than watching someone you have grown to like running out of options.

Like any good film, the lighting, sound and pacing makes all the difference to how gripping a story is. The silence before somebody screams is often far creepier than the scream itself. Add into the mix a goosebump-inducing soundtrack and you have a recipe for tension that you can feel even from the comfort of your sofa.

The golden rule of horror films – always expect the unexpected. A killer plot twist makes for a jaw-dropping moment you won’t be forgetting anytime soon. The best ones are those that make you shout at your screen too and keep you coming back for more.

Feeling your heartrate skyrocket while watching a horror film is the sign it is a good one. The best horror films leave you feeling on edge, swearing that you won’t watch another anytime soon. The thrill you feel will keep you addicted, so what to stream next?
